Wanderers look to build momentum in Canberra clash

The Western Sydney Wanderers will be looking to make it back-to-back victories in the Ninja A-League when they face Canberra United this Sunday, carrying renewed confidence following an impressive comeback victory over Brisbane Roar. Geoff Abrahams’ side head into the Matchweek 3 encounter with momentum on their side after securing their first three points of the 2026/27 campaign in a commanding 3-1 victory at CommBank Stadium last weekend. Despite falling behind to an early own goal, the Red & Black demonstrated the resilience and attacking quality that Abrahams has been working to establish, responding with three unanswered goals to claim a memorable victory in front of the Wanderers faithful. Youngster Talia Younis was instrumental in the turnaround, delivering the corner that saw Sofia Palywoda head home the equaliser before confidently converting a second-half penalty to put the Wanderers ahead. Brooke Miller then put the result beyond doubt with a stunning long strike, capping off an impressive attacking display that saw Western Sydney register 18 shots and enjoy almost 60 per cent of possession. The performance provided an encouraging glimpse of the potential within the Wanderers’ refreshed squad, with the combination of emerging talent and experienced campaigners beginning to take shape under Abrahams. For Younis, the performance was another statement of her growing influence in the Ninja A-League, while Miller’s attacking threat and the composure of goalkeeper Sarah Langman proved equally important in securing the result. Attention now turns to Canberra United, who will be determined to respond after suffering a difficult 5-1 defeat to Central Coast Mariners last weekend. Despite enjoying the greater share of possession, Canberra struggled to contain a clinical Mariners attack, conceding twice in the opening half before the hosts added three further goals after the break. Substitute Sienna Dale provided a late consolation for United, who continued to push forward despite the scoreline. The result will undoubtedly provide motivation for Canberra to deliver a stronger performance on Sunday, with experienced forward Michelle Heyman among the attacking threats the Wanderers will need to contain. Heyman’s presence, alongside the attacking contributions of Darcey Malone and Hayley Taylor-Young, will provide another test for a Wanderers defensive unit that showed plenty of determination against Brisbane. For Western Sydney, the challenge will be to build on the attacking combinations and confidence established in their first victory of the season. With Younis continuing to emerge as an exciting creative outlet, Miller finding her rhythm in front of goal and Palywoda making an impact from midfield, the Red & Black have several avenues to threaten Canberra’s defence. The Wanderers will also take confidence from their ability to respond under pressure, having overturned an early deficit against Brisbane without abandoning their attacking approach. Sunday’s encounter presents another opportunity for Abrahams’ side to demonstrate their progression and establish consistency in the opening stages of the campaign. With three points already secured and confidence building across the squad, the Wanderers will be determined to maintain their momentum and deliver another strong performance against Canberra United.
