Above and beyond

Bruce Kamau

Bruce Kamau has emerged as a hero this A-League season.

On a cold rainy night in Western Sydney, Bruce Kamau is standing amongst a field filled with the next generation of football superstars.

It’s the week of the Sydney Derby, arguably the Wanderers biggest match of the season, and Kamau has volunteered his Tuesday night with Nexus Soccer Solutions to coach and share some inspirational words to the local community.

Nexus Soccer Solutions was established by foundation Wandercrew member Angok Bol who started the program to make football more accessible to grassroots participants in the Western Sydney African community.

Supported by the Wanderers Foundation, the group was provided with an experience at the Wanderers football Park, as well as coaching and playing kits and $15,000 worth of equipment and supplies to support the incredible work Bol has been doing in the region.

Kamau who migrated to Australia in 1999 with his family, believes it’s important to be someone young footballers can look up to so that they can follow their dreams.

“A lot of the young kids, they can see not just myself in the A-League and in Leagues across the world but there are also other young African boys who are making their name and plying their trade in the A-League,” said Kamau.

“For myself, when I came to Australia, there wasn’t really anyone in that position that I could aspire to with the same cultural background as myself.

“So to be able to give that opportunity and that tangible goal to them is just something I’m happy to do.”

It has been Kamau’s best season so far for the Wanderers, scoring six goals in 17 matches for the Red & Black.

When asked to share his advice to the next generation, it’s all about belief something that Kamau has embodied this season in the A-League.

“You (Nexus Soccer Solutions program participants) are able to come here and get the help and training from all the staff here,” said Kamau.

“It’s just about taking it on and if it’s what you want to do in life then you believe in yourself and it’s all possible.”

Anything is possible in life and Bruce Kamau is the perfect example of where determination, hard-work and belief can get you.
