The NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers are disappointed to announce defender Jonathan Aspropotamitis has injured his Anterior Cruciate Ligament and will be sidelined for the remainder of the season.
The centre back sustained the injury in the first half of the Wanderers FOXTEL Y-League Grand Final 3-1 win over Melbourne City on Saturday in Newcastle.
Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas said Aspropotamitis would receive the club’s full support in his recovery.
“As a graduate of our youth system Jonathan is a part of our Western Sydney Wanderers family and this news comes as a huge disappointment following his contribution to our maiden FOXTEL Y-League Championship,” said Tsatsimas.
“We will provide Jon with our full support to aid his recovery and help him through this tough period. We look forward to seeing him back on the field at the earliest opportunity.”
Aspropotamitis has remained positive following the confirmation that he would need to have surgery on his injured knee and will now give complete focus to his recovery.
“Playing a small part in helping the boys and the club win the Y-League final was very satisfying – it was a great achievement for the team and the people involved at the club,” said Aspropotamitis.
“While it has been soured a little due to my injury, I’ve already had so many messages of support from the coaches, the staff at the club and my teammates.
“I have seen other players go through this and become stronger from the experience and that is what I am focused on – my recovery and becoming a stronger player both mentally and physically to continue my football career.
“I know what this club stands for, what people and facilities we have here, and I know I’m in the best place to recover.”
“I’ve had four years at the club and I plan on being here for a lot longer, I feel now more than ever, I have a lot of unfinished business here, and I want to repay all the support the club and our fans have given me.”
