Western Sydney Wanderers FC head coach Tony Popovic is putting the burgeoning squad through their paces in pre-season training, according to Michael Beauchamp, and the defender can-t wait to pull on the red and black.

Beauchamp forms part of Wanderers FC-s inaugural back line, and the centreback said his new coach is working his confirmed players and triallists hard in preparation for the club-s first game – a pre-season friendly against Nepean FC next Wednesday.

“I-m improving each week,” Beauchamp said. “The sessions have been really hard, which is what you expect in pre-season but I-m enjoying it. Every time I come into training I-m looking forward to the session – not so much the running ones but overall I-m really enjoying it.

“The triallists that have come in have been putting in the effort you-d expect, everyone-s fighting for a position, everyone-s been very positive and ready to go 100 per cent.”

Beauchamp, 31, is also working hard to form a successful partnership with fellow centreback Nikolai Topor-Stanley, and he said the Wanderers FC squad is starting to come together as players look to earn a starting berth in that historic first match – with Beauchamp eager for his first start for the club.

“I hope so. It-s up to the boss who he wants out there, there are still a few boys trialling but I-m certainly putting my hand up for the game

“Obviously we still have a fair way to go until the season begins but we-re definitely working on the defensive side of things.

“I hated marking Nikolai on corners so I-m looking forward to having him on my team now. He-s a big boy; I-m looking forward to creating a strong partnership with him.

“The boss has his ideas about the game and everyone believes in it; I think each session we-re getting better and understanding more.”

Western Sydney Wanderers FC kick off their pre-season games against Nepean FC, next Wednesday, July 25, kicking off at 7:30pm at Cook Park, St Marys.

The club then face Blacktown City on August 8 at Lilly Homes Stadium, Blacktown.
