It’s her first Sydney Derby and Western Sydney Wanderers defender Ellie Brush admits Saturday’s Westfield W-League clash is bigger than just any other game.
In a game that could kick-start the season of both clubs, the Wanderers host Sydney FC at ANZ Stadium as part of a double-header with the Hyundai A-League.
Brush is in her first season with the Wanderers and says she’s had this fixture circled on the calendar as soon as the draw came out.
“It’s going to be absolutely amazing to get out there,” the two-cap Westfield Matilda said.
“I’ve never played a derby before and the feeling this week is it’s a different game.
“It’s a good opportunity to get our season back on track and we’re expecting a big crowd and a massive game.
“It doesn’t have to be built up too much. If you have to try and find that motivation for the group you have got a few problems.
“For us as players we understand how important it is for the club and we go in with that mindset of what a massive game it is and a really important day for the club. We know the history and know it’s a massive occasion.”
The Wanderers are currently in eighth spot on the Westfield W-League ladder with four points, just two spots and two points behind the Sky Blues.
With the campaign reaching the midway mark, three points and bragging rights over their neighbours has never been more important.
It all adds to what shapes as a massive occasion for the 29-year-old defender.
“It will really hit when we walk out on the field,” Brush admits.
“I’ve always looked at the derbies from the outside and been a bit jealous of the enormity of the event.
“I know now what it feels like and how important it is for the club. We take that onto the field and are going to put our heart and souls into it.”
