The NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers have today confirmed that captain Robert Cornthwaite has departed the club to pursue an opportunity overseas.

Cornthwaite joined the Red & Black in July 2016 and became an integral part of the Wanderers defence, going on to make 21 appearances across all competitions in his first season.

In July 2017, the 32-year-old was named as the fourth captain in the club’s history and skippered the side for the first time in the Wanderers’ first marquee international match against Arsenal FC that month.

The defender leaves Western Sydney having made 36 appearances and scored three goals across all competitions for the Red & Black.

Cornthwaite said he’ll always look back on his time at the Wanderers with fondness.

“I would love to thank everyone involved at Western Sydney for making my time at the club so enjoyable. Although if was for only a short while, it has had a lasting impression on my professional career,” said Cornthwaite.

“Captaining the club is a career highlight and something I am very proud of.

“I would like to wish all the staff and especially all the players good luck for the remainder of the season and beyond.”

The club thanks Robert for his contribution over the past two seasons and wishes him all the best for the future.
