Foxtel Y-League Wrap: Wanderers fall to Jets

The Western Sydney Wanderers Foxtel Y-League’s winning streak came to end yesterday afternoon after a 5-1 defeat to Newcastle Jets at No.2 Sportsground yesterday afternoon.

Doubles from Mitch Austin and Kosta Petratos, plus a goal from Nicholas Cowburn, ensured the first defeat in five games for the Red & Black whose lone goal was scored by Marley Peterson.

The Wanderers started well and John Roberts outpaced two defenders before firing in a cross which was deflected clear by Jets goalkeeper Tristan Esquilant.

However, the Jets took an early lead after Cowburn scored from outside the box.

Newcastle almost doubled their lead soon afterwards, but Wanderers goalkeeper Jack Greenwood did well to parry a shot from Austin.

The Red & Black regained control of the match and  Agamemnonos shot over the crossbar after good work from Peterson.

Roberts was looking lively on the left wing, and he picked out Oliver Wiggin with a great cross, but Esquilant was able to make the save.

With the first half drawing to a close, Mohamed Adam then had a chance after getting past a defender, but his shot hit the side netting.

The Wanderers had played well in the first half and grabbed a deserved equaliser soon after the restart when Peterson raced onto a through pass and slotted the ball low past Esquilant.

A few minutes later, some brilliant goalkeeping from Greenwood kept the scores level as he made a one on one save to deny Cai Tipaldo.

The Red & Black then had a one on one chance, but Wanderers substitute Oliver Puflett couldn’t beat Esquilant.

With just over twenty minutes left, Newcastle retook the lead with Austin scoring from close range after a pass from Petratos.

There were chances at both ends, and Greenwood tipped a vicious shot from Tipaldo over the crossbar, then seconds later Western Sydney were inches away from grabbing an equaliser when Adam headed Adrian Valenti’s cross against the frame of the goal.

Despite pressure from the Red & Black, it was Newcastle who would score to make it 3-1. Greenwood was unlucky, as he initially made a close range save from Petratos but was unable to stop his follow up shot.

Head coach Arthur Diles pushed players forward in an effort to get back in the game, but it wasn’t to be the Wanderers day and Newcastle rounded off the scoring with late strikes from Petratos and Austin.

Despite, the loss the Wanderers still lead the Foxtel Y-League Conference B table.

The squad will now have a three week break before their final game of the regular Foxtel Y-League season which is against Sydney FC at Marconi Stadium on Sunday 27 January. Kick-off is at 4:30pm.
