Foxtel Y-League Wrap: Wanderers held by Newcastle

The Western Sydney Wanderers Foxtel Y-League team played out an entertaining 0-0 draw against Newcastle Jets at No.2 Sportsground on Friday night.

The results means the Red & Black stay in fourth place on the Foxtel Y-League Conference B table.

The Wanderers made a bright start and Lochlan Constable forced a couple of early saves from Jets goalkeeper Lewis Italiano.

At the other end, Noah Pagden threw himself in front of a goalbound effort from Kosta Petratos, before Jets midfielder Jack Simmons hit the base of the post from a free kick.

Midway through the first half, the Wanderers almost took the lead when Jarrod Carluccio got on the end of an excellent cross from Dean Pelekanos, but Italiano flew to his right to push the header to safety.

Constable was involved again on 34 minutes when he raced down the left side and picked out Rory Jordan, who curled a shot wide of the target. Fabian Monge was the next Wanderer to go close on the stroke of halftime when he beat a defender inside the area, but he could only hit the side netting.

The Wanderers continued this momentum into the second half and a couple of minutes after the restart Jordan played a brilliant pass for Carluccio, with Italiano making a one on one save.

Carluccio was then inches away from breaking the deadlock on the hour mark when he sprinted onto a Kosta Grozos through ball and hit the crossbar.

The Red & Black kept the pressure on as Jordan and Monge were both denied by goal-line clearances. Then with just over 15 minutes remaining, Wanderers substitute Jacob Vasiliou almost made the breakthrough when he got behind the defence, but Italiano was once again equal to the task.

The Wanderers had to weather some late Jets pressure. Wanderers debutant Paolo Bonanni was positioned perfectly to block a goalbound shot from Yerasimakis Petratos, while Jack Greenwood made two crucial saves in the space of a minute to keep the scores level.

Vasiliou had one final chance for the Wanderers after a well-worked short corner routine, but his effort was straight at Italiano.

The Red & Black will have another away trip for their next Foxtel Y-League match which is against Canberra United at McKellar Park on Saturday 28 December. Kick-off is at 4:00pm.
