FYL: Wanderers suffer Derby defeat

The Western Sydney Wanderers have lost 2-0 to Sydney FC at Lambert Park on Saturday night.

Despite a battling performance, second half strikes from Marco Tillo and Jeremy Cox were enough to earn the Sky Blues all three points in Round 9 of the Foxtel Y-League.

The Wanderers had a chance early on in the match after a scramble in the penalty area, but Sydney FC goalkeeper Duro Dragicevic was able to claim the ball.

Matthew Lecce set up Moudi Najjar after a strong run through the midfield with Najjar’s shot unfortunately blocked by the defence.

The Red & Black were on top of the match and Lochlan Constable did brilliantly to beat two defenders only to have his shot denied by Dragicevic.

Lecce went close to finding the opener after spotting Dragicevic off his line, but his shot didn’t have enough power to beat the keeper.

However, it was Sydney that would take the lead before the hour mark after Marco Tillo found the top corner from the edge of the penalty area.

Constable then had a couple shots from distance with Dragicevic making two saves before Fabian Monge flashed a shot wide from 20-yards-out.

Despite the chances, Sydney closed the game three minutes from full time.

Jerrad Tyson did well to save a shot from Tilio but was unlucky to see the rebound fall to Jeremy Cox who finished from close range.

The results has cut the Wanderers lead at the top of the Foxtel Y-League Group B table to four points.

The Wanderers will have a bye this weekend before finishing the Foxtel Y-League season against the Newcastle Jets.
