Josep Gombau says he has a good relationship with new signing Chris Ikonomidis and knows the importance of this Sunday’s clash against the Mariners.

This Sunday the Wanderers will travel up to the Central Coast where they will face the Mariners. Gombau has named his 18-man squad which includes Deadline Day signing Chris Ikonomidis.

“It’s a very big game for us. It’s a massive and important game,” said Gombau.

“Chris is here with us and it’s his first day today. He’s a player that can bring a lot to us, he’s a winger that is very quick.

“He’s got experience from playing in Europe and I know him well from the Socceroos.

“He will be a good help for the rest of our games this season.”

Ikonomidis has revealed that it was a phone call from Gombau that convinced the winger to move across to Western Sydney with Gombau noting that he was the perfect fit for the Red & Black after the departure of attacker Jumpei.

“Chris is a player that can bring to us speed in the front,” said Gombau.

“After Jumpei left we have a spot free there and now Sotirio is also another that can bring us this speed and so is Mark Bridge.

“We have some good wingers in the side.”

The Wanderers will need a win against the Mariners to keep their finals hopes alive with Gombau understanding the enormity of the match.

“Look, for us, it’s a massive and important game,” said Gombau.

“We have just 10 games until the end and we need to concentrate to do our job to win.

“We need to have a spot in the finals.”
