400 students from Western Sydney got to meet their heroes today as the we hosted a Play Football event at Merrylands Oval encouraging kids to sign-up to their local football club.

Students from local schools participated in Wanderers Clinics and got to meet 12 Hyundai A-League players including Japanese international Yojiro and new signing Kerem Bulut.

Clubs from the Granville & District Soccer Football Association were in attendance to encourage new players to register.

Since our formation in 2012 total player registrations in Western Sydney have increased by 129% with 4-11 years olds increasing by an incredible 220%.

Events like today’s in Granville go a long way in engaging young people and turning them into football fans and players.

Merrylands local and midfielder Yianni Perkatis said days like these have helped football become the sport of choice in Western Sydney.

“To see hundreds of kids laughing, smiling and playing football with their heroes is a wonderful thing,” said Perkatis.

“There are so many sporting options children can choose in Australia so to see the positive effect the Wanderers are having on football in Western Sydney is very healthy for the sport.

“For the kids to meet their heroes in person, hear their stories and know that there’s a professional club in their backyard really is inspiring for them.”
