The Chris Ikonomidis/Marcelo Carrusca partnership has quickly blossomed at Western Sydney Wanderers FC as the club continues their push into the six on Friday night.

The classy duo opened up Newcastle Jets regularly and look to have a great understanding after an entertaining 2-2 draw at Spotless Stadium.

“I’ve got [Josh] Risdon on the right and Marcelo in the centre.

“They are fantastic players and week by week we get better and gel well together,” Ikonomidis told Fox Sports.

Carrusca as a playmaker and winger Ikonomidis were only signed in the last month but their ability to find each other has provided the Wanderers with a new attacking thrust.

The pair combined early in Friday night’s draw with Carrusca putting the Caltex Socceroo through on goal, though Ikonomidis’ low shot past Jack Duncan was adjudged to be offside.

They continued their combinations throughout the night in a game that could’ve easily seen more goals.

It bodes well for next week’s derby when the Wanderers will aim to open up the stingy Sydney FC backline.

“That’s football. It ended 2-2 but it could’ve ended 5-2 to us,” added Ikonomidis.

“We’ll take the draw and we’ll keep working towards next week but we’ll be happy with the performance.”

Next week, Ikonomidis is set to get his first taste of the Sydney Derby when Wanderers head to Allianz Stadium on Sunday.

Wanderers in sixth are now four points ahead of Roar in seventh on the ladder.
