Ins & Outs: Wanderers v City

Dean Heffernan

Head coach Dean Heffernan has named his squad for Thursday night’s blockbuster fixture against Melbourne City at the Wanderers Football Park.

Melbourne City will end their 21-day absence from W-League football with a return to action against Western Sydney Wanderers on Thursday night.

The reigning Premiers/Champions lost 2-0 to Sydney FC at AAMI Park on February 4 – the last time Rado Vidosic’s side featured in the league. City have since been left behind by the competition’s heavy-hitters, drifting nine points away from the top four and falling to second-bottom on the Westfield W-League table.

The Wanderers approach the Round 10 contest three points above City in sixth. A 1-0 win over Perth Glory in Round 9 gave Dean Heffernan’s side their second win of the season, after last securing all three points way back in Round 2 against Newcastle Jets on January 2.

Competition will be fierce when the two sides meet at Wanderers Football Park while the top four remains a mathematical possibility for either side to reach before the end of the 2020/21 Westfield W-League campaign.

A win for the Wanderers will bring the Red and Black to within three points of both Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United in the top four – two teams they will face throughout the remainder of the season.
