Joanne Burgess

Born in Sydney, Joey grew up in Campbelltown and began her playing career in 1999 for National Soccer League outfit New South Wales Sapphires.

The crafty midfielder made her Matildas debut against the USA in 2005 and went on to become a regular in the national side, representing Australia in the 2006 AFC Women’s Asian Cup and 2007 Women’s World Cup: helping the Matildas to a breakthrough moment by making the quarter finals of the tournament.
 
Joey made 40 appearances in total for the national side with a return of five goals and also represented Australia in Futsal, plying her trade in the 2008 Women’s Futsal World Cup.
 
After spending the inaugural Westfield W-League season on the books of Sydney FC, Joanne moved to Brisbane Roar in 2009 and became a pivotal figure in the Roar’s dominance in the women’s game. In Queensland Joey qualified for four Grand Finals, winning the Premiership in 2012/13 and the Championship in 2010/11.
 
Having retired after the 2014 Grand Final, Joey returned to football with Marconi Stallions and made a return to the national league when she signed for the Wanderers in September 2016. Joey made her Red & Black debut against Perth Glory in Round 1 od the Westfield W-League 2016/17 season, scoring one goal and setting up another.
