Lachlan Scott seals win for Wanderers

The Western Sydney Wanderers kept themselves within one win of top spot in the PS4 NPL2 after defeating North Shore Mariners 1-0 at Northbridge Oval.

Recently-named NYL Player of the Year Lachlan Scott scored the only goal late in the game to seal the Red & Black’s eighth win of the season.

With Sydney FC winning their match the day before, the Wanderers needed a positive result to keep within touching distance of the league leaders but had to work hard in a first half devoid of scoring opportunities.

A half chance fell to Mario Shabow early on but the North Shore keeper, who was initially caught out of position, reacted quickly enough to spare his blushes as Shabow almost set-up an open goal with a deft touch at the top of the box.

From there the match took its time to turn into anything resembling a spectacle with shots straight to the keeper by Alusine Fofanah and Josh Macdonald the only real moments of action before the break.

The second half followed suit in what was turning into a tense match, taking 30 minutes for the next noteworthy moment as Shabow stayed on his feet – after what looked like a foul in the box – only to see his cross fly narrowly over Lachlan Scott’s head.

But Scott didn’t have to wait much longer for his chance as 90 seconds later he received the ball at pace, cut inside a defender and finished calmly to score the winner.

It was a delightful finish and a goal worth the wait from the striker who has now scored 11 goals in 10 NPL matches this year.

The win keeps Wanderers two points off first place with the Red & Black taking on fourth-placed Marconi Stallions this coming Sunday, 14 May. Kick-off is 7pm.
