Manchester United nearly took the lead inside two minutes, Victor Lindelof drove forwards, before finding Marcus Rashford in the Leeds box and his strike came back out off the post.

Five minutes later, Manchester United did go ahead, Paul Pogba found Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the Leeds box and his cut back was slotted home by Mason Greenwood.

The Red Devils nearly went further ahead when Rashford won a free-kick 30 yards from goal, left of centre and Pogba struck just wide.

Pogba again showed his threat moments later when he broke into the Leeds box, forcing Kiko Casilla into a good stop.

A first Leeds effort came in the 18th minute, when Pablo Hernandez controlled beautifully with his chest, before striking a spectacular volley, but he couldn’t keep it down.

The Whites then had a good chance to draw level, when Kalvin Phillips won possession and Jack Harrison drove into the Manchester United box, before striking just wide into the side netting.

At the other end Pogba worked space for a shot from 25 yards, but his effort went wide of Casilla’s goal.

Hernandez did well to break into the Manchester United box, but couldn’t beat Sergio Romero with a tame effort, before Leeds had a great chance to go level.  Phillips sent Harrison down the left side and his low cross was met by Patrick Bamford, but he was denied from close range.

Against the run of play, Manchester United doubled the lead, after catching Leeds on the counter attack.  Scott McTominay broke forward and fed Rashford, who broke into the box and found the back of the net.

Leeds continued to threaten despite going further behind, Harrison found Hernandez who did well to work room for a shot, but he saw his effort well blocked.

The Whites then had an opportunity from a corner, Hernandez whipped in and the ball fell to Kemar Roofe, who saw a header well saved by Romero.

Rashford again threatened for Manchester United in the 38th minute, he worked room for a shot, forcing Casilla into a really good save.

The Red Devils almost went further ahead just before the break, after again catching Leeds on the break, Rashford teed up Dan James, but he hit the post with his strike.
