Mamre Anglican School and Westfields Sports High School came away from Blacktown Football Park triumphant today after recording victory in the fourth annual Wanderers School Cup.
In the biggest ever year of the competition, Mamre won the Primary School Mixed and High School Girls tournaments while falling to Westfields Sports High School in the High School Boys final.
With qualifying tournaments playing all over Western Sydney from May, over 2,000 students in the region participated in the tournament that reached a climax today with a Finals Gala Day.
Almost 200 teams entered the competition with ten teams qualifying for the Finals Gala Day in each division.
In the Primary School division Mamre defeated Galston Public School with goals to Andrew Shalala, Dempsey Ellem and an Own Goal.
The High School Girls saw Mamre claim their second trophy of the day, defeating Cecil Hills High School 1-0 thanks to a solitary strike by Jessica Curtale.
Rhys Osmond scored the winner in the High Schools Boys as Westfields High School defeated Mamre 1-0.
Aimed to grow the club's goal of encouraging football participation in a safe and supportive environment, the Wanderers' Schools Cup embraces the key principles of sportsmanship, physical activity and social interaction.
“This is the fourth year of us running the Wanderers Schools Cup and each year it just keeps getting bigger and better,” said Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas.
“The competition is about inclusivity, enjoyment and our commitment to community engagement that has seen us traverse the region hosting seven regional qualifying events across Western Sydney that included teams from all of our eight Member Associations.
“We congratulate the teams from Mamre Anglican School and Westfields Sports High for their success and encourage more schools to get involved when the 2017 Wanderers Schools Cup is launched in February next year.”
