Football life has moved quickly for Wanderer Tass Mourdoukoutas since he made his Wanderers debut in the Hyundai A-League over a year and a half ago.

And it has the chance to advance even quicker following his selection in the Olyroos squad for a two-game friendly series against arch-rivals New Zealand next month.

Mourdoukoutas, Keanu Baccus and Tate Russell were all named in the 18-man squad for the series which is an important step up to the AFC U-23s Championship in Thailand next January.

The step into the national team is one that Mourdoukoutas is familiar with, having been named in many of Australia’s junior national team squads.

The upcoming two-game friendly series is an opportunity for Mourdoukoutas to impress coach Graham Arnold ahead of the final squad selection for the upcoming AFC under-23 tournament.

“It means a lot to be selected for the Olyroos. Not only are you representing your country and have the chance to play at the Olympics,” said Mourdoukoutas.

“But history also shows that there have been a lot of quality players who have come through the Olyroos system who have gone on to forge great careers for themselves at a club and international level.”

The 20-year-old has taken advantage of his opportunities since he made his Wanderers debut as a substitute against Wellington Pheonix during the 2017/18 Hyundai A-League season.

Mourdoukoutas’ impressive form at the Wanderers Academy saw him promoted to the Red & Black’s Hyundai A-League side where he has played a vital role in their defence.

The youngster now has his sights set on the upcoming season and is intent on making further strides in his career.

“It is a big season for everyone at the club with the new stadium, some great new signings and a determination from the squad to do a lot better than the last couple of seasons,” said Mourdoukoutas.

“I got a few games under my belt last season and I am looking to kick on this season.

“Having someone like Dylan McGowan next to me and Tarek Elrich is a big help.

“I want to help be a leader at the club and that’s something that comes naturally to me.”

Mourdoukoutas and the Wanderers will next be in action next Wednesday night when they take on Sydney United in the FFA Cup Round of 16 at Campbelltown Stadium. You can get your tickets here.
