NPL Preview: Spirit FC v Wanderers

The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL 2 team will be looking to get back into the top six tonight when they travel to Christie Park to play Spirit FC.

The Red & Black’s last meeting with Spirit was one to remember. Back in April, the Wanderers won 6-0 with Marley Peterson netting a hat trick that afternoon. Jarrod Carluccio, Rory Jordan, and Mohamed Adam also got on the scoresheet.

Spirit FC are currently in sixth place, one point ahead of the Wanderers, and are coming off a 4-1 defeat to Hills on the weekend.

The Wanderers defence will have to watch out for Duncan Stewart, who found the net in that game and is their top scorer with fourteen goals.

There will probably be a familiar face on Saturday, as former Wanderers Academy winger Ahmed Sweedan has featured regularly for Spirit this season.

For the Wanderers, Bailey Rule has impressed over the last couple of years. The right-back won a Grand Final in 2017 with the U18s and won a Championship in 2018 as part of the U20 side.

Still, only 18 year’s old, Rule has been a regular in the NPL 2 first grade team and has toured the United Kingdom and Ireland as a member of the Australian schoolboys squad.

Meanwhile, Elliot Carwardine could be another one to look out for on Saturday. The goalkeeper joined the Wanderers in 2017, keeping a clean sheet on his NPL 2 first grade debut in March 2018.

A former Northern Tigers player, the 19-year-old also started in the Foxtel Y-League Grand Final against Brisbane Roar back in February.
