NPL Preview: Wanderers vs North Shore Mariners

The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL 2 first grade team will begin their 2019 campaign with a home game against North Shore Mariners at Sydney United Sports Centre.

North Shore Mariners are coming off a strong season, finishing 3rd in 2018 before being eliminated in the first week of the finals.

The Mariners have been a tough opponent for the Red & Black over the years with the side only winning one of their previous six games against the North Shore outfit.

For the Wanderers, Jake Trew could be one to keep an eye on after impressing in pre-season.

A former Wollongong Wolves player, Trew earned selection in the Australian Schoolboys team in 2017.

The pacey forward signed with the Red & Black for the 2018/19 Foxtel Y-League season, making his debut for the club in December’s 1-0 victory over Sydney FC.

At the other end of the field, Mohamed Al Taay is another player to watch.

A solid defender who is also capable of playing in midfield, Al Taay played junior football for Marconi Stallions and Blacktown City before joining the Wanderers Academy.

The 18-year-old was a member of the Wanderers U20 Grand Final winning side in 2017 before making the step-up to become a regular in the NPL 2 first grade squad last year.
