NPL Wrap: Wanderers defeated by Northern Tigers

The Wanderers NPL 2 have gown down 3-0 to Northern Tigers on Wednesday night in their rescheduled NPL 2 match at Valentine Sports Park.

The Tigers were victorious after goals from Alexander Brown, Lachlan Lloyd, and Rory Spiers.

Ali Auglah had the first shot for the Red & Black on eight minutes, testing Tigers goalkeeper Tonu Liiband from the edge of the area.

Nicholas Suman was forced into a save on the quarter hour by Ollie Wiggin, but the Wanderers were mostly in control at this stage, and midway through the first half Marley Peterson got behind the defence, shooting straight at Liiband.

The Red & Black were then inches away from drawing first blood in the 32nd minute. Jacob Vasiliou picked out Daniel Wilmering with a low ball into the area, however his shot rebounded off the crossbar.

Sixty seconds later, Rory Jordan weaved his way past two defenders, only for Liiband to make the save.

The Tigers scored against the run of play on 41 minutes when Brown hit the back of the net.

Peterson had a free-kick deflected wide a couple of minutes later, then the Wanderers were dealt a cruel blow in first-half stoppage time as Lloyd made it 2-0 following a scramble in the six-yard box.

Nicolas Milanovic came on at halftime for the Wanderers, making his NPL 2 First Grade debut, and nearly made an immediate impact after Evan Tsakos put in a teasing cross into the box, but the ball was just out of reach for the young winger.

With just over 20 minutes remaining Liiband almost fumbled Vasiliou’s long range shot over the goal line, but he recovered in time to claw the ball away from danger.

On 73 minutes, Suman made a good stop from Spiers, however he was helpless four minutes later when Spiers scored from close range. Late on, Stefan Nikolic and Vasiliou would have long-range efforts, neither of them troubling the Tigers goal.

The result means the Wanderers stay in ninth place. There was better news for the U18s and U20s on the weekend as they both won their games.

The Red & Black will next take on St George FA at Valentine Sports Park on Thursday 22 August. Kick-off is at 8:00pm.
