NPL Wrap: Wanderers downed by Northern Tigers

The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL 2 team were defeated 4-1 by Northern Tigers on Saturday night at Sydney United Sports Centre.

Despite Samuel Silvera’s early goal, the Northern Suburbs outfit would snatch the three points after a double from Liam McConaghy, plus goals from Aram Tayebi Derazkala and Alexander Brown.

The Wanderers had the better of the opening minutes and took the lead with 12 minutes played. Silvera had started and finished the move, playing one-twos with both Tacettin Kumsuz and Joshua Bartolotto before slotting the ball into the bottom corner.

Unfortunately, the Red & Black’s lead didn’t last long and the Tigers equalised a minute later when Liam McConaghy scored from close range.

Silvera also had the Wanderers next chance and did well to evade a tackle before shooting over the crossbar.

Midway through the first half, the Tigers took the lead after a goal from Aram Tayebi Derazkala.

The Red & Black weren’t deterred from going behind and went on the attack. Lochlan Constable and Marley Peterson put in dangerous crosses which the defence had to scramble away.

Silvera continued looking dangerous, setting up Mohamed Adam who forced a save from Tigers goalkeeper Tonu Liiband.

The Tigers extended their lead in first half stoppage time with McConaghy getting his second of the game.

The Wanderers started the second half strong and a swift counter-attack found Peterson, who was denied by Liiband.

Kumsuz was the next to try his luck, but once again Liiband was in position to make the save.

Wanderers substitute Joshua Gulevski also got involved and his shot over the bar after great work from Silvera.

Despite the Wanderers dominating the play, the Tigers got their fourth of the evening with just over 20 minutes left when Brown found the back of the net.

The Red & Black kept going and a few minutes later Silvera made space for a sharp turn, firing the ball inches wide of the target.

With time running out, there were further efforts from Silvera and Puflett, but neither were able to trouble the Tigers’ goal.

The loss sees the Wanderers stay in 10th place on the ladder. However, there was better news in the earlier games with both the U18s and U20s sides winning 4-2.

Next Saturday, the Wanderers NPL 2 team will travel to Pluim park to play Central Coast Mariners. Kick-off is at 4:00pm.
