NPL wrap: Wanderers opener ends in a draw

The Western Sydney Wanderers have begun their 2017 NPL 2 journey with a 1-1 draw against Mt Druitt Town Rangers at Sydney United Sports Centre on Sunday night.

A second half equaliser by defender Jackson Bandiera earned Trevor Morgan’s side a point after former Wanderer Lachlan Roberts had opened the scoring for Mt Druitt in the first half.

The Wanderers dominated most of the possession early on in the match while Mt Druitt looked to catch the Red & Black on the counter.

The away side broke the deadlock when Roberts pounced on a loose ball and weaved his way through the Wanderers defence before rounding keeper Nicholas Suman slotting home at the end of the first half.

The Red & Black came close to equalising after Charles Abou Serhal’s free-kick found Ramy Najjarine in the box, though the latter’s header wasn’t enough to trouble Mt Druitt keeper Carlos Saliadarre.

Tariq Maia and Mario Shabow were combining well in the second half as the Wanderers pushed for an equaliser.

The Wanderers would soon have their goal after a fantastic through ball found Jackson Bandiera springing forward, the defender chipping Saliadarre to draw the scores level.

The Wanderers will now travel to Jensen Park on Saturday night to play against Bankstown FC at 6:30pm.
