NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers will bolster world-leading research at St Vincent-s Hospital Sydney with a new partnership.

Pirtek, a major St Vincent-s supporter, was today announced as a new Wanderers partner and will donate $1,000 to St Vincent-s Hospital every time the Wanderers score a goal.

In recognition of this double dose announcement, the Wanderers goals will be coined “Pirtek Wander Goals” for the Hyundai A-League 2013/14 season.

NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers Executive Chairman, Lyall Gorman, was delighted with the partnership and the potential for many thousands of dollars to aid the much needed research into neurodegenerative disorders.

“Every partner of the Wanderers brings a unique offering to not only the Club, but to the Western Sydney region we are entrenched in,” said Gorman.

“The Pirtek Wander Goals initiative is another great example of our Club and its partners working with the community to enrich people-s lives. This also creates a challenge for our players and Club as more goals we score, the greater opportunity we have to assist in the wonderful research that St Vincent-s Hospital does for neurodegenerative disorders.”

In 2011, Peter Duncan the Founder and Executive Chairman of Pirtek, and a former patient of St Vincent-s, funded the establishment of the Peter Duncan Neurosciences Research Unit at St Vincent-s. Today the unit is making significant inroads in developing treatments for chronic neurological and neurodegenerative disorders such as Multiple Sclerosis, HIV-associated Neurocognitive Disorders, Alzheimer-s Disease, Parkinson Disease and Stroke.

Head of the Peter Duncan Neurosciences Research Unit at St Vincent-s, Professor Bruce Brew said it was touching too see so many organisations come together for a good cause.

“For us, the Pirtek Wander Goals initiative on the part of Pirtek is particularly inspiring in light of the fact that it is completely community based,” said Professor Brew.

“Pirtek has made a huge difference to our research endeavours at St Vincent-s and as a result of their foresight we have been able to make a meaningful difference to those with neurodegenerative disorders.

“We are receiving support from a company that already has form in making a difference in combatting major diseases and is now partnering with one of the great sporting success stories in recent Australian history, the Western Sydney Wanderers.

“We feel honoured to be associated with two such fine Sydney institutions.”

Pirtek CEO Stephen Dutton said now there was extra reason to celebrate every time the net rippled at the home end this season.

“Every time a goal is scored Pirtek Stadium will be set alight and while that crowd is going crazy there will be a few extra cheers as the goal would have just netted another $1000 towards a very good cause,” said Mr Dutton.

“We are proud to be partnering with the Western Sydney Wanderers whose professionalism on and off the field is world class and we are also excited to be joining the clubs passionate fans who are setting the benchmark for stadium atmosphere in Australia.

“We hope Wanderers players and fans take pride in joining us and participating in something we are passionate about.”

The NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers will attempt to score some Pirtek Wander Goals in their opening home match of the season against Wellington Phoenix this Sunday at Pirtek Stadium, kicking-off at 5pm.
