Western Sydney Wanderers striker Lachlan Scott says his team’s character and togetherness were key to their thrilling 3-1 comeback victory over Melbourne City in Saturday’s Foxtel Y-League Grand Final.

Denis Genreau fired City ahead from the penalty spot early in the second half before Scott equalised with 20 minutes remaining in Newcastle.

Scores remained at 1-1 at full-time before goals to Marc Tokich and substitute John Roberts in either period of extra-time handed Wanderers the title.

“We went down by one [goal] and that’s not how you want to start but the boys did well. We fought back and we knew we had it in us. We’ve been doing fitness all year and we knew we could do it,” Scott told Fox Sports.

“We had the legs to run over the top of them and thankfully the talent to put the ball in the back of the net.

“The belief was always there. Especially in a team like this, we get along so well and we all play well together so the belief will always be there.”

City’s Genreau added: “We were unlucky at the end there, we hit the post in the last minute of normal time. But credit to the Wanderers for today’s performance.”
