Sydney Derby breaks W-League record

Thumbnail

The Western Sydney Wanderers broke a long-standing Westfield W-League record on Saturday as the largest ever crowd for a regular season match filed through the turnstiles at Marconi Stadium for the Sydney Derby.

3,084 fans, the majority glad in Red & Black, created one of the most memorable atmospheres ever seen at a top-flight women’s match in Australia with both the RBB and Cove in attendance.

In what was another great sign for the growing strength of women’s football in Western Sydney, Marconi Stadium was rocking as players from both sides responded in kind on the pitch with one of the games of the season (read about the match here).

With the Wanderers continuing their mission to unearth and develop young Western Sydney talent this year’s new squad have performed extremely well in a tough opening to the season that has seen them play last season’s top three teams in the first three rounds.

A predominantly young team, built with the best upcoming talent from across the region, is complemented with USA league winning captain Keelin Winters, former Liverpool striker Hannah Beard and Matilda Caitlin Cooper.

The Red & Black lace-up against top-of-the-table Perth Glory this Sunday 5 October at Marconi Stadium with kick-off at 3pm.
