An intense period of training over the international break could be the tough love Western Sydney Wanderers need to spark their Hyundai A-League campaign, according to Brendan Hamill.

Wanderers’ boss Markus Babbel put his charges through a gruelling fortnight of fitness following the conclusion of Round Four, which saw Western Sydney surrender a two-goal advantage to draw with Brisbane Roar.
Hamill, 26, believes the mental and physical challenge of rigorous training has had a galvanising effect on the Wanderers.
“They were pretty intense,” he said.
“I enjoy it, I love it. You test yourself mentally and physically and as a team you push each other and you get a bond and a further bond is created.
“This game is all about hard work, sacrifice and discipline and that’s what this club is about and it’s what the people of Western Sydney are about.
“We need to do the work to have any chance of challenging for honours this year.”
Western Sydney are set to play their first match of the new season at Spotless Stadium when they host Ernie Merrick’s side in Friday night’s rebel Female Football Round encounter.
And Hamill says a canny Jets outfit should prove an ideal measure of how hard the Wanderers have worked during the international break.
“They’re very experienced, they have a lot of experienced players and they’ve got a lot of attacking flair,” he said.
“They know how to adapt and play which style they’re going to play according to how the game’s playing out.
“So we know that it’s going to be a tough test. Every week we have to focus on ourselves, the respect is there but we have belief and know that if we put in a good performance we can come away with a good result.”
