U20s Grand Final Preview: Wanderers v Northern Tigers

The Wanderers Academy U20s return to Valentine Sports Park on Saturday afternoon with hopes that they can make it three consecutive U20 Championships for the club.

The Red & Black qualified for the decider after a valiant performance in the Semi Final, defeating Rydalmere Lions 1-0 despite playing with 10-men for over an hour.

The match was the Wanderers tenth clean sheet of the season and right back Jack Hutchings has been one of the reasons why the side has been so difficult to break down.

Hutchings started this season with Blacktown City before signing with the Wanderers in the midseason transfer window and has played in every match since joining the club.

On the other side of the defence, Isaac Hovar has also impressed after earning promotion from the U18s side.

Originally from Albury, the left back joined the Wanderers Academy in 2018 following at stint at Marconi Stallions.

Hovar has previous Grand Final experience, having played in last year’s U18 Championship game against Central Coast Mariners.

The Wanderers Grand Final opponent, Northern Tigers, finished only two points behind the Wanderers in the regular season.

Both previous meetings between the sides ended in draws so Saturday’s game is expected to be a tough one.

However, the Wanderers can take inspiration from the last time they played them in a Grand Final.

In 2017, the Red & Black U20s registered a 6-2 victory over Northern TTigers to lift the Championship trophy. Kosta Grozos and Oliver Puflett scored twice that day, while Samuel Silvera and Zachary Duncan also got on the scoresheet.
