The NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers have been knocked out of the Westfield FFA Cup after a defeat at the hands of Adelaide United in Tuesday night’s semi final at Campbelltown Stadium.

Goals from Johna Absalonsen and Daniel Adlung secured the win for the Red whilst Brendon Santalab got the Red & Black on the scoresheet with a penalty.

The away side began on the front foot and took the lead in the 13th minute after Absalonsen pounced on a loose ball in the box and slotted a shot past Vedran Janjetovic that bounced in off the post.

Jacob Melling had a great chance to equalise for the Wanderers but his shot went millimetres wide of the goal.

Melling then turned provider when he sent in a fantastic cross to Oriol Riera but the striker couldn’t find the target with his header.

Frustrated

Adlung would extend United’s lead after with a fantastic curving strike from distance.

The Wanderers’ leading goal scorer Riera was replaced by Brendon Santalab and the super substitute immediately made an impact, winning a penalty after being brought down by Isaías in the box.

The veteran striker cooly converted the spot-kick with a cheeky panenka, setting up a frantic finish to the game.

Despite pressing hard to find the equaliser and take the match to extra time, the match finished at 2-1 with Adelaide now progressing to the Westfield FFA Cup Final.

The Wanderers will now turn their attention to Sunday’s Hyundai A-League match against Newcastle Jets at Hunter Stadium.
