Wanderers downed by City in friendly

The NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers undefeated run in the pre-season has come to an end after a 1-0 loss against Melbourne City at John McEwen Reserve on Friday night.

A Daniel Arzani penalty was the only thing that separated the two sides with the Wanderers fielding a young team after their epic Quarter Final victory against Blacktown City on Wednesday night went to penalties.

A number of players from the Wanderers Academy were given the opportunity to travel with the first team.

The Wanderers had the first chance of the match with Nick Krousouratis rattling the crossbar.

Wanderer John Hall was called into action early, making a fantastic save to deny Christian Cavallo.

A short corner from Melbourne City resulted in Arzani being fouled in the box, slotting his spot-kick in the opposite direction of Hall.

City went close to doubling their lead towards the end of the second half with Stefan Mauk smashing Bruce Kamau’s cut back.

The result marks the Wanderers first loss of the 2017/18 pre-season.
