The Western Sydney Wanderers got off to a flying start in the 2017/18 Foxtel Y-League season after defeating Canberra United 8-0 at Marconi Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Abraham Majok was the star of the show, netting a hat trick and grabbing an assist. Oliver Puflett helped himself to a double, while goals from Mohamed Adam, Fabian Monge and Moudi Najjar rounded off the scoring.

The Red & Black were on the front foot from the opening whistle and debutant Adam was heavily involved in the early exchanges.

It only took the Wanderers nine minutes to get into the lead and it was Adam who opened the scoring. Majok broke down the left flank and slide the ball across the face of the goal, leaving Adam to finish.

Adam almost got a second, minutes later, as his low cross was deflected towards the goal before being cleared off the line.

The Wanderers doubled their lead just before the interval. Once again Majok was the provider, getting on the end of Monge’s excellent through ball, cutting back for Puflett to score.

It was more of the same after the break and Adam slalomed past two defenders before finding Matthew Lecce, who was unlucky to see his shot come off the crossbar.

Majok and Puflett were in the centre of the cation again when the Wanderers made it 3-0 eight minutes into the second half.

Puflett won the Red & Black a penalty and sent the keeper the wrong way from the spot to make it 4-0.

The Wanderers were linking well in attack and scored their fifth goal through a team play.

A sequence of one-touch passes saw Majok burst into Canberra’s penalty area setting up Monge who sidefooted the ball home from 15 yards out.

Unbelievably, Majok would get his fourth assist of the afternoon with ten minutes left. The pacey winger charged down on the right, beating a defender and cutting back for Najjar who rolled the ball into the area to make it 6-0.

In the 88th minute, the seventh goal arrived, with Majok and Puflett combining again.

Puflett played Majok in behind the defence before Majok slammed a low shot past the goalkeeper.

The Wanderers made it eight in stoppage time after winning their second penalty in the match.

Najjar stepped up and although his spot kick was saved, Majok was the first on the rebound, completing his hat-trick.

It was the perfect start for the Wanderers Foxtel Y-League squad as they push to qualify for their very first Foxtel Y-League Grand Final.

The Wanderers will be looking to make it two from two this Saturday when the team travels to the CCM Centre of Excellence to take on Central Coast Mariners. Kick-off is at 10:30am.
