The Western Sydney Wanderers have gone down to the Newcastle Jets after a strong first half was not enough to keep the away team from taking the victory.
A goal by Michelle Carney gave the Wanderers a deserved lead before former player Emily van Egmond struck in the second minute of first half injury time.
The second half was the complete opposite with Jets the better side throughout with their four added goals testament to that.
The match started off at a great pace with both sides directing attacks down the flanks with various degrees of success.
van Egmond had the first shot in anger but it was Wanderers who soon wrestled control of the game with first Seaman and then Beard having chances well saved.
It seemed only a matter of time though before the Red & Black capitalised and they did so through Michelle Carney.
The striker stole the ball from the feet of Jets’ keeper Hannah Southwell and shot into an empty net.
Carney should have had a second in the shadows of half time too when the ball dropped for her in the box. With Southwell completely out of position Carney looked certain to score her second but, possibly unaware of how much time and space she had, blasted the ball over the crossbar.
It was a miss to be rued as instantly the Jets went on the attack and equalised through van Egmond, visibility ecstatic at scoring against her former team.
The second half was a different affair to the first with the Jets the better side. Goals to Katherine Reynolds, Tara Andrews (twice) and Georgia Yeoman-Dale meant a dominant win for the away team.
The Wanderers are away next week for the Sydney Derby at Kogarah.
