Herd was born and raised in Perth, where he played for Joondalup SC and Bayswater City as a junior.
As a teenager, he signed for English side Aston Villa. After graduating through the club’s academy, Herd made his English Premier League debut on 13 November 2010 in a 2-2 draw against Manchester United at Villa Park.
Herd would go on to make 36 appearances in the English top flight before spending time with Chesterfield and Gillingham.
An Australian youth representative, Herd made his Socceroos debut in a friendly against Belgium in 2014 and would go on to make another two appearances for the Green & Gold.
Herd signed a two-year deal with the Wanderers in July 2017 and made his competitive debut for the club on 1 August in a 1-0 win over Wellington Phoenix in the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32.
